Turning Customers into Influencers: The 5 Rs

In an age where consumer skepticism is higher than ever, the customer is the most powerful marketing tool we have at our disposal. Happy customers can be your most vocal brand advocates with the right strategy.

This "Word of Mouth" marketing principle continues to reign supreme in today's hyper-connected world delivering a long-term ROI to your bottom line.

Implementing a strategic customer advocacy program following my 5 R's - Ratings, Reviews, Recency, Responses, and Repeat - will amplify your customers' voices and cultivate a loyal society of influencers to do the marketing for you.

The 5 Rs:

1. Ratings: The Power of the Stars

Stars speak volumes. Whether it's on Google My Business, review platforms like G2 Crowd or Capterra, or social media, high ratings instantly boost trust and credibility. Encourage customers to rate your products or services by:

- Making it easy with prominent rating buttons and links on your website, emails, and order confirmations

- Using automated email campaigns to request ratings after purchase or service completion

- Offering incentives like discount codes or entry into prize drawings for submitting ratings

Remember, every star lost tells a story; actively address negative ratings with professionalism and empathy. Respond promptly, apologize for any shortcomings, and outline steps to improve.

2. Reviews: The Voice of Experience

Reviews are goldmines of valuable insights. They reveal what resonates with customers, their pain points, and areas for improvement. Actively solicit reviews through:

- Targeted email campaigns asking for feedback

- Incentives like discount codes for submitting reviews

- Personalized follow-up requests from customer service reps

But go beyond generic feedback. Ask specific questions that highlight your key differentiators so advocates highlight what truly sets you apart. For example, if you pride yourself on fast shipping, ask "How did our shipping speed compare to your expectations?"

Utilize AI tools like MonkeyLearn to analyze review sentiment and uncover common themes. Respond to all reviews, whether positive or negative, expressing genuine gratitude or addressing concerns promptly and sincerely.

When I was a marketer for a brand with an e-commerce presence, we prided ourselves on product quality and value. Yet our marketing rarely conveyed that message effectively. By asking customers "How did the quality of our product compare to the price you paid?", their reviews highlighted our value proposition setting us apart from the competition.

3. Recency: Keeping the Conversation Buzzing

Freshness matters. Recent reviews carry significantly more weight than aging ones. Implement strategies to encourage a steady stream of new reviews:

- Run limited-time "Review Us" campaigns with entry into prize drawings

- Offer exclusive content or incentives like ebooks or discounts to recent reviewers

- Highlight your latest positive reviews on your website homepage and social media

This shows active customer engagement and keeps the conversation about your brand vibrant.

4. Responses: Building Bridges with Authenticity

Every review is a two-way conversation opportunity. Responding to reviews, both positive and negative, humanizes your brand and builds trust:

- Thank positive reviewers for their support and feedback

- Acknowledge your appreciation for their business and loyalty

- For negative reviews, apologize sincerely and outline specific steps you're taking to address the issue

- Use a warm, authentic tone rather than canned templates

Transparency and genuine concern go a long way in turning a critic into a potential advocate.

5. Repeat

Customer advocacy is an ongoing process, not a one-time campaign. Continuously monitor your ratings, solicit new reviews, highlight fresh feedback, and promptly respond to all reviews. Automate as many touchpoints as possible with tools like:

- Automated email campaigns requesting reviews on a recurring basis

- Review monitoring and response tools like BirdEye or ReviewTrackers

- Social media monitoring to identify brand mentions to engage with

By making the 5 R's a core part of your marketing strategy, you create a self-perpetuating cycle that keeps customers engaged while empowering them as authentic influencers for your brand.

Remember, the 5 R's are not mere metrics; they're stepping stones to creating a community of empowered brand evangelists. By prioritizing your customers' voices and nurturing their experiences, you cultivate a loyal following that actively promotes your brand, making them valuable influencers with the power to attract new customers and propel your business forward.

Spark the advocacy flames: Focus on Ratings, encourage Reviews, embrace Recency, respond with Authenticity, and make it a continual Repeat process. Watch your customers transform into your most powerful allies!
